"Anyone who sees beauty and does not look at it will soon be poor."

This African proverb guided my creative childhood explorations in the primitive Congolese forest where the value of artistic pursuit was encouraged. My childish beaded bracelets, embroidered tea towels, clothes sewn by studying a catalog picture, drawing, it was all a mirror of the African jungle where I was growing up. 

In the Congo's Ituri forest, the pace was slow, so there was plenty of time to create.

It wasn't till I explored the castles and museums in Europe that I discovered framed art and critics that deemed one person's creative expressions to be more valuable than another.

Stil, my European studies, implanted a wide eyed awe and a hunger for excellence. However, at my strict academic boarding schools, art was considered frivolous... so it wasn't till my junior year in college that I discovered you could major in art.
